how your health, wellbeing and wellness are all connected

how your health, wellbeing and wellness are all connected

Your health. The concept of wellness. A life of wellbeing. They’re all unique parts of who we are and how we live. However, each of them co-exists in a cycle that directly impacts the other – and in turn, amplifies the positive impact each has on our bodies, minds, relationships and more.

Recognising and celebrating that cycle can help you to thrive in all kinds of ways. The more you’re aware of the connections between your health, wellbeing and wellness, the more empowered you’ll be to make choices that benefit your everyday. The more you embrace these connections over time, the more naturally they’ll positively feed into each other, too.

The first step to striking this balance? Diving into what they are, how they’re connected and how you can support all three of them.

how do we define health?

Health is how we feel in our bodies and minds. It’s essential for supporting us to get out into the world, navigate the ins and outs of life and keep thriving long into the future. It’s a holistic term that covers everything from our energy levels, to how we respond to illness and injury, as well as how happy and well-rested we feel. Health is the most essential part of being human.

As Lucy Hartley – AIA Head of Shared Value and Wellbeing, says, “It’s what shows up in your numbers – the clinical markers that tell you where your physical health is today”.

how do we define wellness?

If health relates to who we are, wellness can be categorised as how we live. They are the intentional choices, rituals, practices and products that we use in our daily lives that help us to feel well. You can embrace the concept of wellness in a number of ways, including enriching your mind, energising your body and nourishing your skin.

Each of us will have a different approach to wellness, as these practices and behaviours are directly inspired by our unique interests and priorities.

how do we define wellbeing?

Wellbeing is categorised more by how we feel, as a direct result of a considered and consistent wellness practice. It’s a broad term that takes different forms for each one of us, based on your own ideas of fulfilment and happiness. Wellbeing covers a range of aspects of your life, including physical, emotional, social and sexual wellbeing. For this reason, it has a broader definition to health, which is more closely connected to your own self.

It’s the sense that the way you’re living is actually working for you – that the things you’re doing today are building toward the life you want to be living in ten, twenty, thirty years”, says Lucy. “It’s what makes healthy behaviour sustainable, because it’s connected to something that matters to you personally”.

how do the three support each other?

Visualise health, wellness and wellbeing as a circle, in constant motion as we journey throughout our lives. There’s no first step or last step, just an ongoing connection bringing balance and helping us to thrive.

Let’s start with wellness. Say you’ve made the conscious choice to embrace more habits and rituals in your life that align with wellness practices. You might choose to begin a more holistic, daily skincare ritual, start the day with a morning meditation or yoga practice, enjoy a massage for recovery or begin meal prepping. Each of these behaviours, when embraced as part of your everyday life, begins to ladder up to a greater feeling of wellbeing – whether that’s being unwound muscle tension, a clearer mind or healthier skin. Wellness has directly uplifted your wellbeing.

When you live a life defined by a greater sense of wellbeing, you’ll often start to notice short or long-term health benefits as well. You could feel less stressed or anxious, more energetic and active and even more radiant and hydrated in your complexion. You are feeling the benefits of wellbeing within your body and mind; the direct result of the wellness you embraced.

Since these are now habits in your life, you likely continue exploring a life of wellness and the cycle continues.

what can you do to support your health, wellbeing and wellness?

There are countless ways you can support your health, wellness and wellbeing (and the continuous cycle that connects all three). What’s most important is that you find the ways that work best for you, your lifestyle and your interests, so that any changes feel rewarding and empowering.

To support your health, you might choose to:

  • Stay up to date with regular health checks and screenings

  • Bring more consistent movement into your week

  • Choose nutritious meals more often than not

  • Aim for better sleep routines

  • Obtain or review your health insurance coverage, which our partners at AIA Health Insurance have helped take the guesswork out of with their Quote & Apply tool. In a few short questions you can find the most suitable health cover for you to meet your needs.

If supporting your wellness is the focus, you could aim to:

  • Set small, achievable goals that build your confidence over time

  • Take short breaks or mindful moments throughout your day to minimise stress and support mental clarity

  • Maintain strong connections with friends, family, or community.

And finally, you can support your wellbeing by:

  • Reconnecting with what motivates you and why your health matters

  • Building routines that protect your time, energy, and focus

  • Reflecting on your progress to reinforce positive behaviours

  • Making choices that align with your values and long-term goals.

You might also consider utilising a health and wellbeing program like AIA Vitality, which you can access with an AIA Health Insurance policy. It’s personalised to each member and backed by science, so that you have the tools, know-how and motivation to make long-term changes. The program rewards you for making progress along the way (such as weekly rewards for moving more), encouraging you to build positive habits that benefit your future.

It's the building of this mindset and the ongoing practice of these habits that sits at the heart of health, wellness and wellbeing. By recognising the connection between the three and exploring the ways we can maintain that cycle, you’ll feel more motivated to make choices that support them in all kinds of ways as you shape the life you want to enjoy tomorrow.
