Going Organic - Why Australians are turning to Natural Nurturing

We live in a country abundant with nature’s gifts and if recent statistics are anything to go by, Australians are increasingly embracing mother nature and turning to organic products.

A recent report by Australian Organic revealed that more than six in ten Australian households choose to buy organic products in a given year*. The research confirmed that consumers are thinking more carefully about what they are putting in and on their bodies and how their product choices are affecting their health.

At the top of the list of in-demand organic products are edible items such as fruit and vegetables, beef, ready to eat foods and nuts. However, organic cosmetics and health products are also more popular than ever before. As we become more self-aware and realise that nourishing our body with quality ingredients should be a life choice, not a luxury, organic products become a common option.

Why are people "going organic"?

For those surveyed, the motivation behind choosing organic cosmetics differed. Some cited health reasons, while others were more concerned about environmental and welfare issues. Almost half of the organic shoppers in the report expressed that they choose organic products due to an increased awareness of the impact of food and cosmetics on their personal health*. Elle Halliwell, ambassador for Australian Organic, shares this sentiment and has said that “as a mum, choosing certified organic gives me peace of mind and I know I’m also doing my bit for the planet”.

What attracts many people to organics is the philosophy behind protecting the purity and authenticity of every segment of our lives. Organics is so much more than just “synthetic and chemical-free”. It is a whole system or holistic means of growing and handling food and plants.

Going organic does not have to be a strict and uncompromising lifestyle change. Many people have found the perfect balance by actually taking the time to listen to what their body is telling them and making choices accordingly. For example, your hair could be perfectly happy with a regular shampoo, while your gut health yearns for organic vegetables. The most important thing is to find what soothes, nurtures and protects your wellbeing.

Making the switch to certified organic

When it comes to buying organics, not all products are created equal. Elle Halliwell suggests reaching out to companies to find out more about their manufacturing processes or supply chain. In her experience: “the majority of organic brands and suppliers are incredibly proud to be a part of this movement and will be keen to hear from you!” However, it is also a good idea to be wary of false advertising. “Unfortunately, there’s been a raft of non-certified products in the market purporting to be organic when they’re not,” states Niki Ford, Australian Organic CEO. It is important to keep an eye out for an official certification logo on the product packaging to ensure that you are buying an authentic organic product.

The COSMOS organic certification signifies that the entire production process, from sourcing ingredients to going on-shelf, has been executed with considerable care to protect the environment and customer health. Products that are ‘certified natural’ and ‘certified organic’ contain no parabens, mineral oils, synthetic fragrances & dyes, sulphates, silicones and are not tested on animals.

Fortunately, the shift in purchasing habits has made access to organic products much easier. “The industry has become so advanced that nowadays opting for an organic lifestyle is easy. Organic beauty is such a booming industry and the efficacy of products now rivals their conventional alternatives” says Elle Halliwell.

Certified Organic Skincare

Choosing certified organic skincare means that you have made a conscious choice to nourish your skin with naturally sourced ingredients that are rich in properties such as antioxidants, oils and fruit acids. Those with sensitive skin can benefit greatly from organic skincare lines by selecting products that are free from harsh chemicals and other potential irritants. Well-formulated organic skincare product can plump and rejuvenate the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and create a glowing complexion thanks to the powerful properties of natural ingredients.

If you are considering switching to organic products, keep in mind that this doesn’t have to be a major lifestyle change. You might want to begin by substituting one or two products and then introduce new organic items down the track. At the end of the day, it is about selecting the right products and ingredient combinations for your unique complexion and one of the best ways to do this is to speak to one of our skin experts at your local endota spa, or even try products as part of our in-spa treatments, to find the formulations that truly give you an organic glow.
